Bybit filed a civil lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against North Korea, its intelligence agency RGB, and the Lazarus Group, accused of stealing $1.5 billion in Ether on February 21, 2025. A federal judge has already issued a preliminary injunction freezing the stolen assets held by the defendants to prevent transfer or dissipation. According to Chainalysis, this single heist accounts for the bulk of the $2.02 billion stolen by Pyongyang in 2025, out of a total of $6.75 billion siphoned over the years to fund the regime’s weapons program. The legal action, rare for a civil case directed against a sovereign state, could set a precedent and pave the way for similar suits in the crypto industry.
