Southport Acquisition II, a newly formed special purpose acquisition company, has filed for a 200 million dollar initial public offering aimed at identifying an artificial intelligence company to take public. This follows the success of its predecessor, Southport Acquisition Corp., which raised 230 million dollars in December 2021. The new vehicle’s scope is now limited to the artificial intelligence sector, whereas its predecessor adopted a broader approach. Southport Acquisition II will have to contend with increased competition, notably Berto Acquisition II, which has upsized its own IPO to 274 million dollars with a similar mandate. The 200 million dollar war chest may prove insufficient to target the most highly valued AI companies, which reach into the billions, potentially steering the SPAC toward smaller targets or additional capital through PIPE deals.
