A New Mexico court ordered Meta, parent company of Instagram and Facebook, to pay $567 million to address harms caused to young users by its platforms. Of this amount, $420 million will fund treatment services for affected youth, with the remainder supporting prevention and awareness over five years. This penalty follows a $375 million fine in March, bringing the total to $942 million, a negligible sum compared to Meta’s roughly $60 billion in annual profit in 2025. Meta’s stock dipped less than half a percent in after-hours trading to $589.44, while the company announced plans to appeal. This ruling comes amid multiple legal challenges against the company, including an imminent trial in California involving 29 states.
