Amazon instructs AWS engineers to cut CPU waste amid capacity crunch

Roughly 65% of AWS EC2 instances maintain average CPU utilization below 20% over 30-day measurement periods. Facing growing demand from artificial intelligence, the cloud provider has instructed its engineers to shut down idle instances. AWS added 3.8 gigawatts of power capacity last year and plans to double its infrastructure by 2027. EC2 Capacity Blocks for machine learning saw two successive price increases totaling approximately 35% in just six months, reflecting the supply-demand imbalance for GPU resources.
