A Santa Fe judge ordered Meta Platforms to deposit $567 million into a youth harm abatement fund, bringing the company’s total financial exposure in this case to over $940 million. Of that amount, $420 million must be directed specifically toward treatment services for young people. Judge Bryan Biedscheid classified Meta’s platforms as a public nuisance, a legal designation more commonly associated with environmental contamination. Meta must also enhance its age-assurance models, including building an under-13 prediction tool within two years. Meta has indicated it plans to appeal the ruling.
