Bitcoin active addresses reached approximately 980,000 per day on July 31, the highest level since December 2024, after attackers began draining wallets whose seeds were generated on defective Coldcard firmware. Coin Metrics recorded 967,546 active addresses, 54% above July’s average. Galaxy Research confirms 1,596 BTC stolen (2,055 BTC including suspected sweeps), surpassing $100 million. The flaw affected Mk2, Mk3 firmware versions 4.0.1 through 4.1.9, as well as Mk4, Mk5, and Q devices before their patched releases. The first sweep drained 594.5 BTC from approximately 500 addresses, with a median loss of 0.41 BTC per victim.
