A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $567 million into an abatement fund as part of a public nuisance case related to harms caused to children by its platforms. This sum comes on top of $375 million in civil penalties the company already paid this year for violating the state’s unfair practices act. Of the $567 million, $420 million will go toward treatment for people harmed by the platform. Judge Bryan Biedscheid stated that Meta’s platforms are a significant contributing factor to the mental health crisis among New Mexico’s youth. The case is being viewed as social media’s « Big Tobacco » moment, with Attorney General Raúl Torrez indicating he intends to seek up to $62.85 billion in penalties.
