Google DeepMind unveiled WeatherNext 2, a weather forecasting model that outperforms traditional physics-based methods for hurricane prediction. The model predicts tropical cyclone paths and intensity up to 15 days ahead with hourly temporal resolution and runs eight times faster than its predecessors. The National Hurricane Center validated the model during the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. WeatherNext 2 will be open source, allowing DeFi protocols to integrate its outputs for weather derivatives and parametric insurance products. While the model solves the forecasting problem, the crypto ecosystem still needs to develop robust oracle infrastructure and liquidity for functional markets.
