SoftBank has secured a $10 billion two-year margin loan backed entirely by its OpenAI stake from a syndicate including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Mizuho Securities, Apollo Global Funding, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. The loan was finalized on August 6 after difficult negotiations that had initially cut the amount from $10 billion to roughly $6 billion before a corporate guarantee was added. SoftBank has committed over $60 billion to OpenAI and related AI infrastructure projects, and carries a $40 billion bridge loan maturing in March 2027 and a separate $20 billion margin loan backed by its Arm Holdings stake. OpenAI confidentially filed for a US IPO in June 2026, which could eventually provide liquidity for the private shares serving as collateral.
