China launches security review of Palo Alto Networks products, escalating tech cold war

China’s Cyberspace Administration opened on August 6 a formal national security review into products sold by Palo Alto Networks in the country. This review follows a ban issued in January 2026 ordering Chinese companies to stop using cybersecurity software from Palo Alto Networks and a dozen other American firms, including Fortinet, Check Point, CrowdStrike, and VMware. Palo Alto Networks, one of the world’s largest cybersecurity companies, maintains a physical presence in China, making the financial impact of this measure significant for the firm.
