Google DeepMind chief AI officer signed a statement warning AI could cause human extinction—she says odds are ‘not zero’ but disagrees with Elon Musk

Lila Ibrahim, chief AI readiness officer at Google DeepMind, signed the Center for AI Safety’s 2023 statement warning that extinction risks from AI should be treated as seriously as nuclear war. In an interview with Fortune, she stated that the odds are « not zero », while refusing to provide an exact percentage. Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called « godfather of AI », estimates the odds of human extinction between 10% and 20% within three decades, while Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei puts them at 25%. Ibrahim also expressed skepticism toward Elon Musk’s utopian predictions that money will no longer matter by 2036, arguing that no one can accurately predict what the future holds.
