Eric Halem, a former Los Angeles Police Department officer, has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus fifteen years for kidnapping and robbing a 17-year-old in Koreatown. The victim was forced to hand over a hard drive giving access to approximately 350,000 dollars in bitcoins. The former officer, who had left the LAPD after thirteen years of service, benefited from an accomplice who had rented the property and provided the access code. Three co-accused are awaiting trial. Eric Halem also faces separate charges for insurance fraud and an alleged second crypto robbery.
