Bitcoin Bridge Boltz Halts Swaps Indefinitely, Citing AI-Assisted Attacks

Share

Boltz, the non-custodial bridge routing swaps between bitcoin’s mainchain, Lightning Network and Liquid, suspended its services indefinitely on August 3. The team cited months of automated, AI-assisted attacks that outpaced its ability to fix vulnerabilities, with attackers iterating faster than a small team can identify and patch flaws. User funds were never at risk due to the non-custodial design, and financial losses were borne by the company alone. This suspension has disrupted wallets like Bull Bitcoin, Aqua and ZEUS that relied on Boltz as backend infrastructure, with these teams now working to restore services. The incident occurs amid a broader security crisis for bitcoin, as an exploit of Coldcard hardware wallets drained approximately $114 million in BTC since July 30.
