Russia has banned Bitcoin mining in Moscow and its region, as well as in parts of the Kursk region, from August 15, 2026 to December 31, 2032, according to Resolution 936 signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. At least 65 data centers in the Moscow region already represent 734 megawatts of combined capacity, a figure authorities project will reach 3.6 gigawatts by 2032. The country still accounts for 17.2% of global Bitcoin hashrate in Q3 2026, just behind the United States. A bill under discussion in the Duma proposes to criminalize unregistered mining, with fines of up to 2.5 million rubles and prison sentences of up to five years.
