Oil tumbles and stock futures surge after Trump said Iran deal was near

Oil prices fell sharply Monday, with Brent losing 4.9% to $83.66 per barrel and WTI down 5.8% to $79.81, after Donald Trump said he would order U.S. forces to refrain from attacking Iran and that a deal to end the fighting was near. U.S. stock futures climbed, with the Dow gaining 1.1% and the S&P rising 0.6% before the opening bell. The U.S. and Japanese central banks intervened in currency markets to support the yen, pushing the dollar down to 155.20 yen before it rebounded to 156.79 yen. In Asia, the Nikkei fell 0.9% and South Korea’s Kospi plunged 5.1%, while European markets advanced, with the DAX up 1.5% and the CAC 40 gaining 1.1%.
