Coldcard Bitcoin Wallet Attack: Nearly $90 Million Stolen, Victims Speak Out

Share

An unprecedented attack targeted Coldcard hardware wallets, resulting in the theft of 1,431.97 BTC, worth nearly $90 million, from 5,415 compromised addresses. The vulnerability stems from seeds generated by defective firmware versions, allowing attackers to recover recovery phrases through brute force. Among the victims, Jonathan Goodman claims to have lost $1.6 million, Tim Lamb approximately $125,000, and Adam Carson over $400,000. Manufacturer Coinkite has suspended shipments and destroyed all devices with the vulnerable firmware, though the fix only protects new seeds. Bitcoin trades around $62,500, down 4.1% over seven days.
