Europe is racing to protect its infrastructure from extreme heat waves exacerbated by the climate crisis. Eurostar has announced it will equip a new fleet of up to 50 Celestia trains with air conditioning capable of operating in temperatures up to 55°C, a significant upgrade from the originally planned 45°C threshold. Oslo Airport has been forced to douse its tarmac with around 13,000 liters of water every hour to prevent damage from asphalt temperatures reaching 52°C, while Stockholm’s transport operator has painted railway tracks white to prevent heat-related buckling. Wildfires in France and Spain have led to the evacuation of more than 330,000 people this summer. According to projections, extreme heat days across central Europe could double or even triple by 2050.
