Amazon shares surged more than 9% in after-hours trading on Thursday after the company reported second-quarter results driven by Amazon Web Services. AWS posted $42.2 billion in revenue in Q2, up 37% year-over-year, its fastest growth in 18 quarters, with operating income of $16.6 billion and a 39.4% margin. Amazon’s total net sales rose 20% to $200.6 billion. CEO Andy Jassy said Amazon now expects to spend $220 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, up from its prior estimate of $200 billion. Despite the elevated spending, Jassy said Amazon still will not have enough capacity to meet all demand in 2026, and believes this will also be true in 2027.
