Google’s Nobel-winning AI leader sees a ‘renaissance’ ahead—after a 10- or 15-year shakeout

Sir Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind and 2024 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, predicts a « new golden era of discovery » in 10 to 15 years. This necessary transition period for the $3.9 trillion tech giant will be followed by medicine transformed by AI, enabling personalized treatments and cures for major diseases. DeepMind, which merged with Google Brain in 2023 under his leadership, developed AlphaFold, the model that solved the protein folding problem and is now used by over 3 million researchers. Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery spinoff, already has cancer treatments in preclinical trials with hopes to move to clinical trials by year-end. Alphabet shares have risen approximately 65% since the release of the latest Gemini models.
