Google backs $15B loan for Anthropic’s massive Texas data center campus

Google is providing loan guarantees worth $15 billion to finance a data center campus developed by Nexus Data Centers in Hubbard, Texas, spanning approximately 2,800 acres. The project targets an initial capacity of 500 MW, with the first phase alone expected to cost over $5 billion and a mid-2026 deadline. Google’s total data center investment in Texas could reach $40 billion as part of a strategic partnership to strengthen Anthropic’s AI infrastructure against competition from OpenAI and Meta. In November 2025, Anthropic announced a $50 billion commitment to US AI infrastructure, including data centers in Texas and New York in partnership with Fluidstack. This massive concentration of centralized computing power poses a direct challenge to decentralized compute protocols like Render, Akash, and io.net.
