Citadel, the alternative asset management giant founded by Ken Griffin, has acquired a stock portfolio from Situational Awareness, the AI-focused fund launched by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. The fund has delivered spectacular performance with over 1,000% returns since its late 2024 inception and grew to over $20 billion in assets under management by mid-2026, with $13.7 billion disclosed in its latest 13F filing. The fund posted a 439% gain in the first half of 2026 alone, but suffered significant losses on certain AI positions, prompting the sale of part of its portfolio to Citadel. The acquisition by Citadel validates the fundamental value of positions in AI infrastructure plays like Bloom Energy and Nvidia, as well as crypto miner holdings.
