The European Central Bank has formally asked BNP Paribas to present its transition plans for CEO Jean-Laurent Bonnafé, who has been in the role since December 2011, as part of its annual capital requirements review. The supervisory authority is also requesting details on succession planning for Chairman Jean Lemierre, signaling a broader governance review of the bank’s most senior leadership. At the May 13, 2025 annual general meeting, shareholders voted 98% in favor of raising the mandatory retirement age for the CEO from 65 to 68, with the option for one additional year. BNP Paribas has also been quietly building its crypto credentials, participating in the Eurosystem’s wholesale settlement trials between 2024 and 2025, and beginning to offer cryptocurrency exchange-traded notes to retail clients in France in March 2026.
