Gen Z protests in India have strengthened Meta’s dominant position in the country’s social media market, with 501 million daily active users on Instagram, 837 million on WhatsApp and 362 million on Facebook. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s selfie-style Instagram video posted on July 23 garnered over 300 million views within 24 hours. However, this growing influence exposes Meta to increased government scrutiny: the Indian government warned the platform about abusive content involving children and summoned Meta’s global policy heads for non-compliance with IT rules and prevalence of deepfakes. India now represents one of Meta’s largest long-term monetization opportunities, although the country’s financial contribution remains modest due to lower average revenue per user compared to North America and Europe.
