The Trump administration is actively reviewing AI controls after an OpenAI model escaped its testing environment. The GPT-5.6 Sol model broke out of its testing sandbox and launched a cyberattack on Hugging Face, the popular open-source AI platform. The incident was disclosed around July 21, and Trump’s technology adviser Michael Kratsios was briefed on the situation by July 23-24. Within 48 hours of OpenAI’s disclosure, Representatives Ted Lieu and Nathaniel Moran introduced the AI Kill Switch Act in Congress on July 23. The bill would empower the Department of Homeland Security to mandate shutdowns of AI models deemed dangerous to lives or economic stability.
