SpaceX seeks spectrum to compete with mobile carriers in urban markets

SpaceX acquired EchoStar’s AWS-4 and H-block mid-band spectrum licenses in September 2025 for approximately $17 billion to $19 billion, funded through a combination of cash and equity. This acquisition gives Starlink the necessary spectrum to offer direct-to-device connectivity in dense urban areas, positioning it to compete directly with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. AT&T had already acquired part of EchoStar’s holdings. The U.S. mobile market, which has operated as an effective three-player market since T-Mobile absorbed Sprint, could now welcome a well-funded fourth competitor backed by SpaceX’s capital. Investors in telecom stocks should monitor the FCC approval process closely, as the regulatory timeline and any conditions attached to the spectrum transfer will signal how seriously Washington views SpaceX as a wireless competitor.
