TSMC’s Arizona fab delays could squeeze Bitcoin mining chip supply through 2027

TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, has announced that its second Arizona fabrication plant will not begin high-volume production until the second half of 2027. The company has committed approximately $165 billion to its Arizona operations, backed by $6.6 billion in CHIPS Act grants and $5 billion in federal loans. TSMC CEO C.C. Wei stated that building fabs in the US takes at least twice as long as in Taiwan. Companies like Bitmain and MicroBT, which manufacture next-generation Bitcoin mining ASICs, rely on TSMC’s 3nm, 5nm, and 7nm process nodes. The next Bitcoin halving event, expected in 2028, will occur before this additional production capacity becomes available.
