212 hacks in six months: the most attacked semester in crypto history

Share

Blockaid recorded 212 security incidents in the first half of 2026, surpassing the total for all of 2025, with cumulative losses exceeding 1.1 billion dollars. The total amount remains below the 2.58 billion dollars lost in 2025, illustrating higher frequency but smaller sums per incident. Approximately 55% of stolen funds, over 600 million dollars, are attributed to North Korean actors, notably through the hacks of Drift (285 million dollars) and KelpDAO (292 million dollars), with no smart contract vulnerabilities exploited in these attacks. The semester also saw the first hack of an AI agent: 216,000 dollars stolen from Bankr via prompt injection, while Anthropic revealed that its Claude model identified vulnerabilities in established cryptographic algorithms such as HAWK and AES. Blockaid anticipates continued growth in social engineering attacks, with losses now concentrated on human errors rather than code flaws.
