Samson Mow Cautions Against Rushing Bitcoin’s Post-Quantum Upgrade

Samson Mow, Bitcoin developer and CEO of JAN3, is cautioning against rushing Bitcoin’s adoption of post-quantum cryptography, warning that a hasty transition could expose the network to more immediate risks than the quantum threat it aims to address. Research published by Anthropic shows that its AI model, Mythos Preview, discovered new attacks against weakened cryptographic algorithms, including attacks targeting HAWK’s newer security assumptions. Mow argues that prematurely replacing Bitcoin’s ECDSA and Schnorr signature schemes with post-quantum alternatives could inadvertently weaken the network against classical computing attacks. Ledger CTO Charles Guillemet highlighted the need for crypto-agility, emphasizing the ability to replace cryptographic algorithms without redesigning entire systems.
