Twenty-five major tech firms, including Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta, signed an open letter on July 24 urging the US government not to impose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models developed by Chinese companies. Kimi K3, released by Moonshot AI around July 17, matched or exceeded prominent US models from OpenAI and Anthropic on coding benchmarks, while being priced approximately 40% lower. According to Martin Casado from Andreessen Horowitz, approximately 80% of startup pitches incorporating open-source AI stacks now utilize Chinese open models. The Little Tech Association, representing nearly 200 firms, also warned that blocking access to Chinese models would disproportionately harm smaller US startups without making these models disappear globally.
