A whitepaper published in March 2025 by Google Quantum AI indicates that fewer than 500,000 physical qubits would be sufficient to break Bitcoin’s cryptography, approximately ten times less than previous estimates that reached 13 million qubits. Approximately 7 million BTC, worth around 470 billion dollars at current prices, sit on vulnerable addresses whose public key is exposed on the blockchain, including 1.1 million BTC attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto. In April, Project Eleven’s Q-Day Prize rewarded the cracking of a 15-bit key on a public quantum computer, a record still far from Bitcoin’s 256-bit keys. BIP-360 and BIP-361 proposals organize migration to quantum-resistant addresses, with potential freezing of unmigrated funds after five years.
