Amazon has asked U.S. federal regulators to approve the launch of up to 5,105 internet satellites for a direct-to-device (D2D) network. The request follows Amazon’s April announcement to acquire satellite operator Globalstar for approximately $11.6 billion. The D2D network will provide smartphone connectivity directly via satellites, targeting users underserved by existing wireless providers. Amazon expects the Globalstar deal to close in 2027, with D2D deployment beginning in 2028. The initiative directly competes with SpaceX’s Starlink, the dominant low Earth orbit internet provider with more than 10,000 satellites in its constellation.
