The WIPO report documents an explosive growth in generative AI patents. Patent families surged from 14,000 in 2023 to over 37,800 by 2025, nearly tripling in just two years. China dominates this field with over 38,000 inventions between 2014 and 2023, while the United States generated roughly one-sixth of that number. Six of the ten largest patent holders are Chinese firms, including Tencent, Baidu, and Ping An Insurance Group. This concentration of intellectual property rights around a handful of major corporations and state-backed institutions poses a legal and geopolitical threat to decentralized AI projects.
