Canada on Friday celebrated the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario to Detroit, Michigan. The six-lane bridge spans 2.4 kilometers and rises 46 meters above the Detroit River at its highest point. Construction began in 2018 and was entirely funded by Canada at an estimated cost of $6.4 billion. U.S. and Michigan officials were absent from the ceremony due to the 50% tariff dispute announced by President Trump earlier this week. More than 70% of Canada’s exports go to the United States, and the bridge will directly compete with the Ambassador Bridge, which has been the only commercial trucking route between the two countries for nearly a century.
