$70 Million Gone in 40 Minutes: CZ Weighs in on Coldcard Fallout

CZ, founder of Binance, warned Bitcoin holders after $70 million was stolen through a Coldcard hardware wallet firmware bug. On July 30, hackers drained 1,196 wallets in 41 minutes by exploiting a flaw in the random number generation for private keys. The defect, introduced in March 2021, had replaced the dedicated random chip with a weak backup system relying on the device serial number and clock. Researchers at Galaxy and Block confirmed the attack was automated: every transaction paid identical abnormally high fees and none left change behind. Coinkite has released fixed firmware, but users with compromised seeds must generate new ones.
