Ripple CTO and XRP Ledger co-creator David Schwartz proposed a Bitcoin cold storage strategy dubbed the « nuclear briefcase » approach. The method comes in response to the Coldcard wallet hack, where a firmware bug led to the theft of 1,367 BTC (approximately $89 million) due to predictable seed phrases. The strategy relies on two identical hardware devices, such as the SecuX W20, configured with the same 24-word seed phrase and PIN code. The devices are given to two separate relatives, while the PIN codes are entrusted to two friends who only reveal them after the owner’s death. According to Schwartz, this human engineering-focused approach provides better protection than traditional cold storage practices.
