Why did a $154 billion CEO just endorse stripping most Americans of voting rights—and taking us back to the 19th century?

Tobias Lütke, CEO of Shopify, has publicly endorsed a tiered voting system that would strip voting rights from anyone who pays no income tax. Under this proposal, non-taxpayers would receive zero votes, those earning $1,000 to $100,000 would get one vote, and those earning $500,000 or more would receive up to five votes. The system would affect millions of people, including retirees living on Social Security, students, caregivers, disabled Americans, and low-wage workers. Shopify commands a market capitalization of approximately $154 billion. In 2022, Lütke himself secured 40% voting control over Shopify through a Founder Share structure, raising questions about the consistency between his corporate governance practices and his political positions.
