Wall Street Is Starting to Treat Data Center Backlash as a Credit Risk

Wall Street banks financing the AI data center boom are now incorporating local opposition into their credit risk assessments. During the first quarter of 2026, at least 75 projects worth approximately $130 billion faced local resistance, according to Data Center Watch. Goldman Sachs estimates that more than $5 trillion will be invested in AI infrastructure by 2030. Lenders are now paying closer attention to permits, community support, and concerns about electricity consumption, water usage, noise, and the size of facilities.
