US State Department embeds Bitcoin and privacy tools into formal foreign policy through new Freedom Tech program

The US State Department has launched the Freedom Tech Excellence Program, a public-private partnership that embeds private sector employees within American diplomacy. Four founding partners have been integrated: Palantir Technologies, Anduril Industries, the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation, and the Bitcoin Policy Institute. These temporary experts work on topics such as online freedom of expression, counter-surveillance measures, and responsible AI governance. Bitcoin is now classified as a freedom tool to promote abroad rather than a speculative asset to regulate, which permanently alters the US regulatory landscape. A Freedom Tech DC summit scheduled for September 22-23, 2026 could serve as an early indicator of the policy directions that will be adopted.
