Built by Canada at a cost of $6.4 billion Canadian, this six-lane, 2.4-kilometer bridge provides an alternative to the Ambassador Bridge, which previously held a monopoly on freight transportation between the two countries, particularly for the auto industry. Over 70% of Canadian exports are destined for the United States, and Detroit is the number one truck crossing point on the U.S.-Canada border. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony excluded American and Michigan representatives following President Donald Trump’s announcement of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
