Trump’s ‘Golden Age’ economy pitch fizzles with midterm voters

With midterm elections less than three months away, Donald Trump’s claims of an economic « golden age » appear out of step with voter concerns. Only 39% of Americans approve of Trump’s overall job performance, with just 30% supporting his handling of inflation, which 31% of voters cite as their top issue in an Economist/YouGov poll. The economic picture is mixed: unemployment remains low and consumer spending holds up, but inflation has risen above 3% since the conflict with Iran began in February, and gasoline prices exceed $4 per gallon, the latest such level has been reached in summer in over twenty years of AAA data. Republicans find themselves in a difficult position, reluctant to criticize Trump while acknowledging that his tariff policies are contributing to household affordability challenges. The White House is reportedly considering measures such as capital gains tax cuts to try to improve the political landscape before November.
