Trump administration ends Medicaid, CHIP funding for gender-affirming care for children

The Trump administration announced Tuesday it is implementing a rule ending federal Medicaid and CHIP funding for gender-affirming care for children and youth, including puberty blockers, hormones and surgical procedures. The measure, set to take effect on October 13, will bar federal funding in these two state healthcare programs from going toward gender-affirming care, though state dollars could still cover these treatments. Twenty-seven U.S. states have enacted restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors, according to health policy organization KFF. The rule does not affect federal coverage of mental health services for children.
