Bill Swearingen, co-founder of the SecKC security meetup in Kansas City, developed the noRecognition project: AI-generated patterns that prevent surveillance software from classifying what they cover. After approximately 31 million tests, he claims to produce on-demand patterns effective against Flock, Axon, Clearview AI, and nine other open-source detection algorithms. On August 1, he publicly demonstrated the technology at Def Con in Las Vegas: a 2009 Toyota Yaris covered in his pattern was driven past a Flock camera, proving the concept’s effectiveness, according to him. These patterns do not blind the camera but disable the automatic detection layer that identifies vehicles, license plates, or faces. Swearingen plans to commercialize clothing and vehicle skins through a crowdfunding campaign.
