ScientistOne addresses evidence failures in AI-generated research

Google launched ScientistOne, an AI framework designed to eliminate invented citations in AI-generated academic research. Across 75 evaluated papers and 337 individual reference checks, the system recorded zero hallucinated citations, compared to rates as high as 21% for previous systems. The technology relies on a Chain-of-Evidence architecture with three core components: the Problem Investigator, the Discovery Engine, and the Paper Writer. Developed by Rui Meng and Tomas Pfister at Google Cloud AI Research, the system achieved perfect scores on score verification and method-code alignment. Beyond eliminating hallucinations, ScientistOne also achieved state-of-the-art performance on the MLE-Bench and Parameter-Golf benchmarks.
