Romania expels Russian diplomat after shooting down three drones, escalating NATO-Russia tensions

Romania expelled a Russian diplomat on July 27 after its military shot down three Shahed-type drones confirmed of Russian origin over its airspace on three consecutive days from July 24 to 26. Romania’s Foreign Ministry declared the diplomat persona non grata, giving them five days to leave the country. Bucharest presented physical evidence of the drone incursions to the expelled diplomat before their departure, and also recalled its ambassador from Moscow for consultations. In May, Romania had already closed Russia’s consulate in Constanta and expelled a Russian consul following a similar incident in Galati, prompting Moscow to retaliate in June by shutting down Romania’s consulate in St. Petersburg.
