Ripple CTO Emeritus Breaks Down Bitcoin Forks: ‘Why Else?’

David Schwartz, former CTO of Ripple, commented on X about the logic behind Bitcoin hard forks. He explained that forks give participants the ability to choose between competing sets of rules and get what they want by interacting with whichever side of the fork they prefer. If an alternative becomes more attractive, users can migrate toward it. The BIP-110 soft fork faced a setback: a minority chain created by its supporters lasted only two blocks. This proposal, formally called Reduced Data Temporary Softfork, called for a one-year restriction on arbitrary data in Bitcoin transactions, including Ordinals, BRC-20 and Runes fungible tokens, and oversized OP_RETURN.
