Billy Markus, co-founder of Dogecoin, believes that ending merge mining would be « dumb and pointless ». Merge mining allows miners to simultaneously mine Dogecoin and Litecoin with the same hashpower, maximizing their mining rewards. Dogecoin and Litecoin implemented merge mining in August 2014, before which the Dogecoin network was vulnerable to 51% attacks due to insufficient hashrate. Dogecoin and Litecoin remain the largest and most profitable merge mining combination among scrypt cryptocurrencies. Although Markus has been out of development since 2014, he has stated he holds no investment in scrypt altcoins, having sold all his holdings including 50 BTC, 440 LTC, and 6 million DOGE.
