OpenAI is preparing its first consumer device, a screenless smart speaker shaped like a doughnut, roughly the size of a hockey puck, equipped with speaker grilles, microphones, lights, a camera and sensors. The device, designed with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio, would cost between $300 and $400 and be available in 2027. OpenAI acquired Ive’s device startup io for $6.4 billion in May 2025. The announcement comes as Apple sued OpenAI in July over alleged misappropriation of hardware trade secrets, with OpenAI filing a motion to dismiss on Wednesday. Apple is also seeking a preliminary injunction that could complicate the speaker’s launch.
