OpenAI is hiring a Power Trading Lead to manage hedging strategies across electricity and natural gas markets as the company races to build out data center infrastructure for its AI ambitions. The company’s upcoming facilities are projected to require around 3,200 megawatts of power, roughly enough to power a mid-sized American city. OpenAI has signed a 25-year agreement with a Southern Company subsidiary securing up to 1,000 MW of power starting July 2026, leaving more than two-thirds of its projected demand uncovered. A 10% move in power costs at 3,200 MW scale could translate into hundreds of millions of dollars annually in additional expenses.
