Three of the world’s most valuable private companies, OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX, have filed for IPOs with a combined valuation projected in the trillions of dollars, yet none have published audited sustainability reports or disclosed their Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions data. SpaceX filed its S-1 prospectus in May 2026, while OpenAI and Anthropic submitted confidential filings in June. AI data centers are among the fastest-growing sources of energy demand globally and could emit tens of millions of metric tons of CO2 annually by 2030 without meaningful mitigation measures. The SEC’s climate disclosure rule and the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive have set precedents for climate risk reporting, but a broader post-ESG sentiment in financial markets has reduced pressure on companies to volunteer environmental information.
