This rebound follows a seasonal dip in Q1 2026, when balances fell by $25 billion to $1.25 trillion after consumers paid down holiday spending. Total U.S. household debt stood at $18.8 trillion at the end of Q1 2026, encompassing mortgages, student loans, auto loans, and credit cards. The NY Fed announced that a forthcoming Liberty Street Economics analysis will examine discrepancies between bureau-reported and lender-reported data on credit-card delinquency metrics.
